When you think of Sonoma, you likely think of wine. That’s because the region produces some of the top wines in the world! Between our mild year-round weather, preferential terroir, and various microclimates, numerous wine varieties thrive throughout the valley’s rolling hills and calm meadows. On your next visit to Sonoma, you’re sure to find an abundance of these top Sonoma Valley wines!

1. Chardonnay

When it comes to white wine, Chardonnay is the king of the Sonoma Valley. It all started in France in the Burgundy region, and is now the most planted grape variety globally. However, Sonoma’s geographical diversity allows these grapes to develop various tastes, such as creamy and citrusy.

While Sonoma is known for its oakey and buttery Chardonnays, many producers now use neutral oak or stainless steel. Although you can sip this wine alone, combining it with chicken, shellfish, and creamy pasta will enhance its boldness.

2. Pinot Noir

Hailing from Burgundy, France, Pinot Noir is one of the oldest grapes in the world with a cult following. Characterized by its thin skin and susceptibility to terroir, Pinot Noir produces wines with flavors ranging from cherry and raspberry to earthy and floral notes.

Similarly, the Pinot Noir brewed in the Sonoma Valley has varying tastes, depending upon where it is planted. You have one taste near the foggy coastlines and another one further inland, where plants get plenty of sunshine. Pair this light red pour with a charcuterie and cheese board, creamy tomato pasta, and pork chops.

3. Rosé

Pink is popular again, and the wine industry has embraced it. No wonder the pink Rosé wine is popular with visitors and locals alike! This drink is also produced using red wine grapes, but the contact period with their skin is shortened before fermentation. As a result, the final product has a blushed pink look.

You’ll taste various forms of Rosé during Sonoma wine tours and tastings, such as dry, sweet, still, sparkling, lighter, and deeply hued. Thanks to this incredible variety, Rosé can be paired with almost everything. It is best when you’re out on a sunny day and want something light & refreshing.

4. Cabernet Sauvignon

As one of the most popular Sonoma Valley wines, Cabernet is among the most popular wine varieties globally and in the United States. Originating in the 1600s in France, it now makes up 20% of the wine produced in Sonoma County, including the Sonoma Valley. Given the fruit’s popularity, it is grown globally and is typically aged in French oak.

This dark and rich drink makes your taste buds feel fruity and spicy. Moreover, it is perfect for enjoying red meat, blue cheese, and mushrooms. Or, sip it on its own affront a cozy fireplace or outdoor fire pit on your Sonoma vacation.

5. Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvage means wild, hence the derivation of Sauvignon. The origins of this grape are also wild, as it grew endlessly in the Bordeaux region. However, its growth has been tamed, and the taste has been refined significantly. This grape came to popular attention only when it headed for New Zealand from Europe back in the 1980s.

It has a clean and dry taste and is considered a perfect treat for warmer climates. Some say it tastes like a medium-acidity hybrid of peach and passion fruit. Since it has an herbal undertone, it pairs perfectly with mint, cilantro, parsley, white meat, green salads, tart cheese, and vegetarian delights.

6. Syrah

Syrah should be on your list when on a Sonoma vacation. It is mostly grown in the cooler coastal regions of Sonoma County. Its planting has expanded under the radar to the extent that Syrah now has two names: Syrah & Shiraz. While they both originate from the same grape variety, Shiraz is bolder and fruitier, while Syrah features more earthy and savory notes.
